If I check the "Real-World Map Size" button it shows up in the rendering, but not to the proportions I need and I cannot modify it other than where it is placed by using the Gizmo. Uncheck it, then it doesn't show up at all.
I've been more of a modeler/texturer/lighter in Max in the past, and rigging/animation has seemed a bit overwhelming ... but with these new tools, I don't know ... I might just have to give it a try.

I thought this was interesting about "Polar Express"
re: eye movement (lack of) and eyebrow positioning

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/in_depth/Opinion/polar_opposites

"In life, we make eye contact with one another maybe 20 per cent of the time. The rest of the time we glance around framing thoughts, keeping a look out for predators, whatever. We focus at times close up and at other times far away, depending on the thought. For mo-capped photoreal humans to come of age, the animators will have to figure out how to give eyes random focus that's correlated to the thought process. This isn't likely to happen soon. Even if a method of random focus can be developed, how will that be co-ordinated with human thought? Humans are hardwired by nature to recognise and respond to facial expression, particularly in the eyes. Our sense of sight is many times more powerful than our sense of hearing, and for a good evolutionary reason - if we couldn't detect predators until we heard them, we'd all be prehistoric lunch."

__________________________________________________

scroll down on this page to see more edited images (before and after) of the conductor and the boy...

http://wardomatic.blogspot.com/2004/12/polar-express-virtual-train-wreck_18.html

...simple changes in the eyebrows (moved up for surprised expression vs. down for mean) and obscuring of the eye balls in some shots, making wider lips etc. would have helped the realism.

Ward Jenkins' blog:

"I sat there just staring at this image, trying to figure out what happened. What exactly is going on here? Why does the image on the top look so engaging, so vibrant, so full of life, but the image on the bottom - which is supposed to be the exact same performance of the actor "captured" by the computer - look so dead and puppet-like? I went around the internet searching for anyone who might've tried to explain this. I found nothing. There were many who talked about it, who went on about The Uncanny Valley and such (which I mentioned in my previous post), but never anyone who really sat down and analyzed the movie and its characters, frame-by-frame. This is when I decided to do some investigating on my own."

"And my main problem with the Hero Boy (besides his eyes) were his eyebrows and his mouth. Maybe the original boy from whom they used to model for the CG character had downturned eyebrows, but I guarantee you that he did not look pissed off and mad at everybody all day. If the filmmakers could've just raised the eyebrows a bit, especially in this scene as he's watching in amazement at this fantastical event, then there could've been some more humanity put into the boy. Just these subtle touches make all the difference in the world."

"Here, the boy has gotten his ticket and is apparently mesmerized by the darn thing. He looks so vapid. The one thing that I noticed in the movie, was that it seemed like they wanted to light Hero Boy's eyes with such intensity that we would be in constant awe of them. But in reality, they looked like doll eyes. It's just not natural to be able to see all of the iris all of the time. There will always be some shadows present, even with the most dramatic, intense eyes."

http://wardomatic.blogspot.com/2004/12/polar-express-virtual-train-wreck.html

"I enjoyed the use of the camera as you can definitely tell that Zemeckis was having fun with his new-found freedom from the usual restraints of camera work within a live action setting. If you've ever watched a movie being made, you know how much time is spent on getting the camera and lights set up. It literally is like watching grass grow. Very tedious and time consuming. So you can see where he's wanting to go with this film. Zemeckis just wants to have fun. And he does with several shots, like the lost ticket scene. Also with the train on the frozen lake. There's some great visuals going on here, but I swear, each time we cut back to a reaction shot of the characters, I was thrown out of the film like a Bob Knight chair. It was so hard for me to watch this film. "

I am constructing a kangaroo of sorts (not sure how cartoonish or realistic the head will be). So far I decided to try my hand at using NURBS (since all school really taught me was how to use polygons). I have constructed the body and now it is time for the hands and feet.

I have pretty good reference pictures but Im not sure if it is a good idea to make my limbs in NURBS like I did the body. I know I could convert it all to polygons in the end but Im not sure. Personally I find that NURBS seem harder to attach together with other surfaces but maybe there is a method I have not explored yet.

As for the legs, I had the perfect shape by using the curves tool (creating points on the graph) since I could make the leg initially close and accurate to the way a kangaroo's foot is actually shaped instead of taking a sphere or something and manipulating it through isoparm addition.

Thoughts?

So I have been dicking around with 3dmax for a few weeks now, starting to get well comfortable with da interface and have produced some niceish landscapes and objects. Time now to jump in to head modelling, have set up my front and side planes in max with my work image(my son) and am now ready to rock. Thing is though I am unsure as to the best way forward from here. I followed the 3dbuzz VTM on head modelling but I am none too clear on using the cut tool.
Is there a method strongly recommended by anyone in here, possibly backed up with a kick ass tutorial?
cheers in advance!
